On or about the 19th day of May, 1905, the defendant company employed the plaintiff to take charge *447of its business at Circle City, Alaska, for the term of one year, commencing on the 1st day of June, 1905, at a salary of $175 per month, payable monthly at the end of each and every month during the term, and it was further agreed that the defendant would board and lodge the plaintiff, or pay him in lieu thereof $50 per month at the end of each and every month.
