TJOFLAT, Circuit Judge:

Appellant was charged with conspiring with four other individuals to possess and distribute cocaine in violation of 21 U.S.C. § 846 (1970). He was convicted and sentenced to ten years imprisonment and a fifteen year special parole term. 1 During the course of the trial appellant was also summarily cited for criminal contempt un der Fed.R.Crim.P. 42(a) and sentenced to six months imprisonment.
