DeBRULER, Justice.

This appeal arises from the denial of a petition for post-conviction relief. On August 22, 1978, appellant was sentenced to life imprisonment for the crime of kidnapping. This court affirmed his conviction on direct appeal. Clay v. State (1976), 264 Ind. 495, 346 N.E.2d 574.

There are two issues presented for review: (1) whether appellant was denied his right to effective assistance of counsel at trial; and (2) whether the issues presented in appellant's petition for post-conviction relief were waived under the doctrine of laches.
