GREGG COSTA, Circuit Judge:

The parents of a severely disabled child sued the school district where the child suffered abuse at the hands of his special education teacher. They asserted claims under federal disability law on behalf of their child, as well as claims of their own. A jury awarded a substantial verdict.

When parties appeal a case that went all the way to verdict — something we see less and less of these days — the arguments usually focus on the sufficiency of the evidence; evidentiary rulings such as the admission of expert testimony; jury instructions; and the amount of damages.…
