Plaintiff Donald Coleman brought suit against defendant Central Illinois Public Service Company (CIPS) following an accident at its Coffeen, Illinois, power plant. At the time of his accident, plaintiff was employed as an ironworker by third-party defendant McCartin & McAuliffe Mechanical Contractors, Inc. (McCartin & McAuliffe). Mc-Cartin & McAuliffe was a subcontractor of CIPS, retained to perform coal silo repairs.
