This case was commenced by the filing of a summons and complaint on 25 September 2002. It arises out of Plaintiffs’ allegations that the methods of electing members of the Board of Directors of the Lumbee River Electric Membership Corporation (“LREMC”), a private North Carolina nonprofit rural electric cooperative distributing retail electricity in sections of four North Carolina counties, are racially discriminatory.
