Marsha M. Molard, then eighteen years of age and living with her mother, Marie Puverge, was injured in an automobile accident while riding in a taxicab on October 16, 2002. Because she could identify neither the taxicab driver nor the driver of the other vehicle involved in the accident, she filed a claim with Pilgrim Insurance Company (Pilgrim) seeking uninsured motorist benefits under a standard Massachusetts automobile insurance policy, seventh edition (policy), that Pilgrim *327had issued to Puverge.
