The defendant, a black man, was convicted of rape, armed burglary, and other charges arising out of the rape and stabbing of a white woman in her apartment on the night of August 30, 1978. The convictions were affirmed by the Appeals Court. 10 Mass. App. Ct. 330 (1980). We granted the defendant’s application for further appellate review to consider the application of G. L. c. 234, § 28, to the interrogation of prospective jurors in such cases.
