In 1963 defendant Elmer C. Clark owned and operated a farm in Madison County. Defendant Clay Roberts was the manager of his farm. On 26 August 1963 plaintiff, son of defendant Clark, was twenty-one years old and had a bachelor of science degree in civil engineering from North Carolina State College. On that date he was employed by the North Carolina State Highway Commission as a civil engineer in a two-year training program at a salary in excess of $500 a month, and was also employed by his father to do part-time work as a laborer on his farm under the supervision of defendant Roberts.…
