The defendants Denise Whitehead and Mary K. Connolly were each indicted for rape, armed robbery, armed assault with intent to murder, and assault and battery by means of a dangerous weapon. Upon joint trial, they were convicted of rape, unarmed robbery (the judge having directed verdicts of not guilty on the balance of the robbery indictments), and assault and battery (as lesser included offenses on the indictments for the aggravated assaults).
