Defendants in criminal cases have a constitutional right to effective assistance of counsel (US Const 6th Amend; NY Const, art I, § 6). In People v Baldi (54 NY2d 137 [1981]), we set the standard for claimed ineffective assistance of trial counsel, holding that the constitutional requirements are met when the defense attorney provides “meaningful representation.” We are now called upon, for the first time, to set a standard for claimed ineffective assistance of appellate counsel.
