Defendant was convicted following a jury trial of assault with intent to commit criminal sexual conduct involving penetration, MCL 750.87; MSA 28.282, and first-degree criminal sexual conduct, MCL 750.520b(1)(f); MSA 28.788(2)(1)(f). He appeals as of right.

According to the testimony at trial, the complainant finished her work shift at the U. S. Post Office in Lansing at 4:00 a.m. on November 26, 1983, and left for home. While driving in a rural area toward Mason in Ingham County, she noticed a car following closely behind her. She increased her speed to 80 to 85 miles per hour in an attempt…
