Erica Hoffman was rendered a quadriplegic from injuries she suffered as a front seat passenger in a rollover of a 1999 Ford Mercury Cougar Coupe (Cougar). She and her parents, Gary and Sandra Hoffman, (collectively, Hoffmans) sued Ford Motor Company (Ford) claiming she was wearing her seatbelt at the time of the accident but, due to a defect in its buckle, it released during the accident causing her to be ejected from the vehicle and to suffer a paralyzing spinal cord injury.
