The plaintiff sued the Cairas, his former landlords, seeking damages under G. L. c. 186, § 15B (7), as appearing in St. 1978, c. 553, § 2, 2 equal to three times the amount of his $400 security deposit, and an attorney’s fee, for the Cairas’ failure to place the deposit in a separate escrow account within thirty days of receipt, as required by § 15B (3) (o). The Cairas did not pay or offer to pay interest to the plaintiff on the security deposit. Fourteen months after receiving the deposit, the Cairas sold the real estate to a new owner and transferred to him the security deposit together…
