To revise a quotation, we live in a world full of hexavalent chromium waste. 1 Nowhere is this more true than in the soil that supports our manufacturing industry; the chemicals that make heavy industry possible also, in many cases, follow the pull of gravity to where they are least wanted and least noticed, and abide as a silent menace under our feet.
