On the evening of June 7, 1976, appellant shot and killed his mother in the kitchen of the home where she was residing. The death weapon was a 22 bolt action rifle which belonged to his father. Appellant was convicted of murder in the first degree and the jury fixed his punishment at life imprisonment in the penitentiary. Throughout the trial proceedings appellant was represented by counsel from the Public Defender's Office in Tuscaloosa and at arraignment pleaded not guilty and not guilty by reason of insanity.
