I. Introduction

We granted leave to appeal in these five cases limited to the issue whether a defendant’s inculpatory statement is inadmissible per se if induced by a law enforcement official’s promise of leniency. 417 Mich 1036,1037,1038, 1040 (1983). In People v Jones, 416 Mich 354; 331 NW2d 406 (1982), cert den 460 US 1084; 103 S Ct 1775; 76 L Ed 2d 347 (1983), this Court was confronted with substantially the same issue.
