A jury in the Boston Juvenile Court found Felix Santiago (defendant) delinquent by reason of several charges, including murder in the first degree.1 The charges stemmed from a criminal episode that occurred on June 5, 1994, when the defendant was sixteen years old.2 At that time, the Juvenile Court’s jurisdiction over the defendant, while the case against *299him was pending, extended until his nineteenth birthday.
