Acting under authority of an act of Congress of February 28, 1891 (26 St. at L. 195), on March 16, 1896, the Osage Nation of Indians leased to Edwin B. Foster the lands of the Osage Nation, comprising about 1,500,000 acres, in what was then the territory of Oklahoma, for oil and gas purposes for a period of ten years. This lease was duly executed on the part of the tribal authorities and approved by the Secretary of the Interior on April 8, 1896. Subsequent thereto the Indian Territory Illuminating.
