SANBORN, Circuit Judge,

(after stating the facts.) Letters patent grant a public franchise, giving to the inventor some compensation for the exercise of his inventive genius in the discovery of, and his labor and ingenuity in reducing to practice and describing, novel and useful inventions, by which the public may attain beneficial' results with less expenditure of time and labor. From every patented invention of value the compensation derived by the inventor is small in proportion to the benefit conferred upon the public.
