OPINION
SHEA, Justice.
The defendants in these consolidated cases appeal the denial of their respective applications for postconvietion relief. In unrelated cases, each defendant pleaded nolo contende-re to a charge of possession of a firearm without a license. The defendant, Eduardo Tavarez, also pleaded nolo to an additional charge of possession of a firearm by an alien. Each defendant at the time of his arrest was a lawful, permanent resident of the United States. Each defendant is a national of the Dominican Republic.
