This action, was brought to recover damages for libel.

The complaint alleged that plaintiff was a resident of the county of San Diego, and the head of an institution known as the “Universal Brotherhood Headquarters, Loma Homestead,” at Point Loma in said county; that the defendant corporation was the owner and publisher of the Los Angeles Daily Times, a newspaper of general circulation; that on October 28, 1901, the defendant “wickedly and maliciously and with intent .and design to injure, disgrace and defame this plaintiff and to bring her into public discredit and obloquy,” published in said…
