Carolyn Makovi sued her employer, The SherwinWilliams Company, for wrongful discharge. In her complaint, filed in the Circuit Court for Baltimore City, Ms. Makovi alleged that she was employed, on an “at will” basis, as a chemist in the employer’s paint factory; that in August, 1983, she learned that she was pregnant; that on October 10, 1983, the employer told her that “she could not work at her job as long as she was pregnant” and that “her pay and her medical benefits would stop until she became disabled because of her pregnancy”; that her baby was born April 12, 1984; that…
