The defendant was indicted in the circuit court of McLean County on six counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse, a felony. (Ill. Rev. Stat. 1989, ch. 38, par. 12— 16(d).) The case proceeded to trial. Following the State’s presentation of its case in chief, the defendant and the State began plea negotiations. The defendant agreed to plead guilty to three counts of misdemeanor criminal sexual abuse. (Ill. Rev. Stat. 1989, ch. 38, par. 12 — 15(c).)
