Over a period of approximately 10 months in 1976 and 1977, brochures offering a “3-day-holiday-for-two-people ‘on the house’” and including numerous other benefits were mailed to thousands of California residents by defendant/respondent Columbia Research Corporation. This holiday package was offered for the price of $15.95. Many people responded to the brochure by mailing defendant checks for $15.95 which were subsequently cashed.
