On June 26,1982, the plaintiff, Laura Appleton, was seriously injured and her husband, Allen Appleton, was killed in an automobile accident on River Street in Hudson. The plaintiff, individually and as administratrix of her husband’s estate, brought this action under G. L. c. 258, § 1 (1984 ed.), the Massachusetts Tort Claims Act; G.
