APPEL, Justice.

Richard Daughenbaugh died after he was assaulted by a group of people on the banks of the Des Moines River in Des Moines. Four people—Kent Tyler, James Shorter, Yarvon Russell, and Represe Williams—were originally charged with murder in connection with Daughen-baugh’s death. Tyler was tried separately from the others and was convicted, of sec ond-degree murder for his role in punching Daughenbaugh in the face prior to the group assault which caused Daughen-baugh’s death.
