The defendant, John Reed Stewart d/b/a J.R.S. Interiors, appeals his conviction, following a jury trial in Superior Court (Nadeau, J.), on a felony count of issuing a bad check. See RSA 638:4, I, IV(a)(l) (1996). We reverse and remand.

The jury could have found the following facts. In October 2001, the defendant hired Auger Building Company to complete an extensive renovation of his house, for a total cost of around one million dollars.
