Defendants were predominantly long-term employees of Newsday and Hoy, two newspapers which were wholly-owned subsidiaries of the Tribune Company during the relevant period. They were involved in defrauding thousands of advertisers of over $100 million. Eight of the nine defendants have pled guilty to conspiracy to commit mail fraud under sections 1341 and 1349 of Title 18 of the United States Code.
