Appellant Aniedi Abasiekong, a Nigerian-born black, originally sued his employer, the City of Shelby, North Carolina, and City Manager David Wilkison, alleging that his discharge from the position of Director of the City Housing Department violated 42 U.S.C. §§ 1981 and 1983.1 Seeking both *1056compensatory and punitive damages, Abasiekong contended that his discharge was racially motivated and was accomplished through a denial of due process, since he was terminated without a hearing and under stigmatizing conditions.
