Again before this Court is the saga of the vaquita, the world's smallest porpoise and a critically endangered species. In the recent litigation before this Court, it was undisputed that the vaquita, endemic to the northern Gulf of Mexico, was being caught inadvertently and strangled in the gillnets used to catch other fish. Consequently, the vaquita is on the verge of extinction; only about 15 of this evolutionarily distinct marine mammal remain today.
