This appeal, arising out of a dispute between the Cambridge police and the city, concerns the definition of length of service on the police force for purposes of computation of vacation benefits for permanent police officers. The plaintiffs, all permanent members of the regular Cambridge police force, brought an action for themselves and on behalf of other permanent members of the force against the defendants, seeking a declaration under G.
