JACKSON, Judge.

On 27 October 2004, Christopher Bryan Venters ("plaintiff") commenced a civil action against John Albritton ("defendant"). The action arose out of an automobile accident on 29 November 2003, in which plaintiff was the owner and driver of a vehicle which struck a horse owned by defendant. The summons in the case listed two addresses for defendant: 430 West Fourth Street, Washington, North Carolina ("430 W. 4th Street"); and 1018 East Fifth Street, Washington, North Carolina ("1018 E. 5th Street").
