Specialist Robert D. Maynard Jr. pled guilty to absence without leave (AWOL) under Article 86, Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ), 10 U.S.C. § 886 (2000), and was convicted by a military judge sitting alone. Following a pre-sentencing hearing, a panel of officers and enlisted members sentenced Maynard to ten months’ confinement, reduction to the lowest enlisted grade, partial forfeitures for the period of confinement, and a bad-conduct discharge.
