Dean Daugherty sued Liberty National Life Insurance Company ("Liberty National") and Perry Hartley, alleging defamation, intentional infliction of emotional distress, and interference with business relationships. Daugherty voluntary dismissed his claims of intentional infliction of emotional distress and interference with business relationships. The jury returned a verdict in favor of Daugherty on his defamation claim, awarding him $300,000 in compensatory damages, and the trial court entered a judgment on that verdict.
