HARWOOD, Justice.

This is an appeal from a judgment in the amount of $500,000.00 awarded as dam ages in a libel suit. The plaintiff below was L. B. Sullivan, a member of the Board -of Commissioners of the City of Montgomery, where he served as Police Commissioner. The defendants below were The New York Times, a corporation, and four individuals, Ralph D. Abernathy, Fred L. Shuttlesworth, S. S. Seay, Sr., and J. E. Lowery.
