This action was instituted for the purpose of obtaining a decree of separate maintenance. In order to understand the legal problems involved, it is necessary to review the steps taken by the parties in connection with this action. The plaintiff and respondent will be referred to as the wife and the defendant and appellant will be referred to as the husband.

The parties were married in New York City in 1931, and at the time of the commencement of this action resided in the Laurelhurst district in Seattle, Washington. The husband was employed as a senior aeroplane pilot by United Air Lines.…
