WAHL, Justice.

Defendant was found guilty by a district court jury of a charge of being a felon in possession of a handgun, Minn.Stat. § 624.-713, subds. 1(b) and 2 (1982). The trial court sentenced defendant to 16 months in prison but stayed execution of the sentence, placing defendant on probation for 3 years, the first 6 months to be served in jail.
