Petitioner William Paul Fearrington, an employee of respondent University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, filed a grievance through the University’s internal' grievance procedure alleging that he had been denied a reclassification because of his race. In the course of the grievance proceedings, the University discovered evidence that petitioner’s position had been under-classified and it retroactively reclassified and promoted him, resulting in retroactive pay of $9,804.91.
