OPINION

ROSS, Judge.

This appeal requires us to decide whether Hennepin County was the proper venue for the state to prosecute Douglas Pierce for violating an order for protection by sending a message electronically to his former girlfriend. The state charged Pierce in Hennepin County with violating the Domestic Abuse Act, Minn.Stat. § 518B (2008), and the district court found him guilty after a bench trial. We hold that venue under the act is appropriate either in the county from which the sender e-mailed the message or the county in which the recipient opened it, but we also hold that the…
