A federal jury found Terry Nazarenus guilty of two counts of aggravated sexual abuse, see 18 U.S.C. § 2241(a), after a four-day trial in early 1992. His conviction was affirmed on appeal. See United States v. Nazarenus, 983 F.2d 1480 (8th Cir.1993). Mr. Nazarenus subsequently petitioned for federal postconviction relief, see 28 U.S.C. § 2255, contending that he received constitutionally significant ineffective assistance of counsel at his trial.
