WIGGINS, Justice.

Relevant to this appeal, a jury returned a verdict finding Christopher Barron Smith guilty of assault with intent to inflict serious injury, willful injury causing serious injury, assault on a peace officer while using or displaying a dangerous weapon, and assault while participating in a felony. 1 The district court instructed the jury it could find Smith guilty of these crimes either as a principal, an aider and abettor, or under the theory of joint criminal conduct.
