BEANCH, Justice.

Defendant contends that the trial judge erred in admitting into evidence statements allegedly made by defendant to Detective Eichard E. Washburn.

The test of admissibility of a confession is whether the statements made by the defendant were in fact voluntary and understandingly made. State v. Gray, 268 N.C. 69, 150 S.E. 2d 1; State v. Rogers, 233 N.C. 390, 64 S.E. 2d 572. In the case of State v. Fox, 277 N.C. 1, 175 S.E. 2d 561, Sharp, Justice, succinctly stated the procedure and rules concerning custodial confessions, as follows:
