After a jury trial, the defendant, Stephen Pappas, was convicted of robbery in the third degree in violation of General Statutes § 53a-136 (a),1 and larceny in the second degree in violation of General Statutes § 53a-123 (a) (2).2 The defendant, who also had been charged with being a persistent felony offender, entered a plea of guilty to that charge. The trial court rendered judgment in accordance with the verdict and the plea, and the defendant appealed to the Appellate *857Court.
