The defendant, Frederick Payne, Sr., was convicted after a jury trial of risk of injury to a child in violation of General Statutes (Rev. to 1993) § 53-211 and misdemeanor coercion in violation of General Statutes § 53a-192.2 The Appellate Court affirmed the judgment of conviction, and we granted the defendant’s petition for certification limited to review of the following questions: “(1) Did the Appellate Court properly hold that General Statutes § 53-21 is violated by conduct posing a risk of injury to a child’s mental health?
