Plaintiff Khalil Fareed was to be a witness in a landlord-tenant lawsuit scheduled for a hearing in the Thirty-Sixth District Court in Detroit, Michigan on May 4, 2012. He was wearing a kufi, which is a head covering commonly worn by Muslims as a religious observance, when he attempted to gain entrance.
