We granted leave in this case to determine .whether the firefight.er’s rule adopted in Kreski v Modern Wholesale Electric Supply Co, 429 Mich 347; 415 NW2d 178 (1987), applies to bar a suit brought by a volunteer firefighter injured while responding to an emergency. After considering the public policy basis of the firefighter’s rule, we conclude that the rule should not be extended to volunteers.
