This case involves a constitutional challenge to Alabama’s procedures for the release of patients committed to the state’s mental health system after being found not guilty of a criminal offense by reason of insanity. Named plaintiffs Joseph Berry and Albert Williams filed suit on behalf of all persons who have been or will be committed to the Alabama mental health system following findings of not guilty by reason of insanity.
