After a jury trial, defendant, Johnny Ortiz, was found guilty of aggravated battery in violation of section 12 — 4(a) of the Criminal Code of 1961 (Ill. Rev. Stat. 1987, ch. 38, par. 12—4(a)) and was sentenced to five years in the Department of Corrections. On appeal, defendant seeks to have his conviction reversed and the cause remanded for a new trial. Defendant asserts that his appointed defense counsel committed errors which denied him effective assistance of counsel. We agree with defendant. Accordingly, we reverse and…
