In an indictment returned in the circuit court of Cook County, defendant, George W. Del Vecchio, was charged with murder (Ill. Rev. Stat. 1975, ch. 38, par. 9 — 1(a)(2)), rape (Ill. Rev. Stat. 1975, ch. 38, par. 11 — 1), deviate sexual assault (Ill. Rev. Stat. 1975, ch. 38, par. 11 — 3), and burglary (Ill. Rev. Stat. 1975, ch. 38, par. 19 — 1). Following a jury trial, defendant was found guilty of each of the charged offenses.
